Hornby Southern Class 700 Drummond

Hornby's 2015 Southern Class 70 Drummond is well detailed, all-round pickups, and has relatively easy provision for a reasonable level of extras. Our example here adds Zimo MX649 sound decoder and SugarCube9 speaker in the tender, hard-wired, and in the loco we use a tiny Zimo MX681 function decoder to power boiler door lamp, nano firebox glow LED and Seuthe #22 smoke generator.

The MX649 just fits low enough in the tender to allow the original metal weights to be retained, although we removed the decoder's protective sleeve and shielded with some electrical tape instead. The SugarCube speaker required a hole to be created under the coal load, and the coal load itself to be slightly modified where the speaker sits underneath, but the result is very effective. Sounds loaded here were M7, but could just have easily been T9 or even some of the other Southern oldies!

There is plenty of space in the boiler for the MX681 decoder, as well as the resistors required for the firebox light and the lamp. The original plastic chimney has been removed and replaced with a white metal one, in order to safe-guard the model from the heat produced by the Seuthe #22. Finished off nicely with a weather crew.
