Bachmann OO 108 DMU DCC Sound

Example 1: CT SL51-4 with 28mm round speaker

Quite a simple install, here we have a 3-coach Bachmann 108 DMU, into which we've added DCC sound to the motor coach, and function decoders to the other 2 coaches to provide lighting.

The primary decoder is a CT SL51-4 with 8pin plug, and a huge 28mm round Zimo 1W/8ohm speaker with as tall an enclosure as we could get in. The seating area has had a small modification to accomodate the speaker, but it is worthwhile, as the resulting sound is huge and full!

Into the other 2 coaches, we've installed CT DCX33 decoders, which are function-only, with a small stay-alive capacitor in each to avoid flickering. Passenger figures have been added throughout, as well as drivers and working cab lights.

Example 2: Zimo MX648R with Zimo LS26X20X08-1W Dumbo speaker + MX685 in dummy

First, we install the MX685 function decoder in the dummy coach... these come with wires-only normally, so we have added an 8pin plug to make it neat.

Example 2 Example 2

The MX648R plugs straight in and sits neatly in the recess provided on top of the motor block. The small Dumbo is wired up, so we just need to create some space for it in the seating area.

Example 2 Example 2

Still sitting too high to get the body back on, so make an aperture in the seating plastic floor so it can sit slightly lower...

Example 3: Similar, but with stay-alive too

Kit: MX648R; RailExclusives BabyBoomer 26x20x08-1W; LifeLink with 4x 330uF/470uF Tall Tantalums; MX617 in dummy with 8pin plug added

Basically the same approach as Example 2, but we've added a bit of stay-alive to the motor coach on this one, in the form of our LifeLink connection PCB and an array of 4 Tall Tantalums.

Example 3 Example 3

Example 3

The speaker sits on its' side in the corridor, which is hidden fairly well from view through the windows.

Example 3 Example 3

A bit of BlackTack to keep the speaker wires out of sight on the floor.

Example 3

4 Tantalums connected in parallel, via the LifeLink, then joined to the decoder's common positive (BLUE wire) and ground (a solder pad on the decoder). Parts wrapped in Kapton tape for protection.

Example 3 Example 3

Stay-alive array tucks neatly behind the block, with LifeLink PCB in the recess with the decoder.

Example 3 Example 3

In the dummy coach, we've used an wired MX617 with an 8pin DCC plug added.
