A floating 6pin DCC socket is provided in the boiler, similar to other DJM steam models...
However, in the J94, there is enough length behind the boiler door for a direct plugin sound decoder, the MX649N.
A standard Zimo 9mm SugarCube speaker also fits in the boiler, with the decoder just slotting in above it.

Developing the above approach further, we set the challenge to increase the speaker size, and to add some stay-alive to this
model. Still using a direct 6pin plugin sound decoder (MX649N), but this time with a louder YouChoos SugarStrand7 speaker
(25x9x7mm) which is notably better performing than the standard 15x11 SugarCube-style speakers, we also find space for
stay-alive using a SACC16 kit and some Tantalum capacitors on board.
The boiler in the J94 is surprisingly long, so it isn't too hard to achieve this.
A good loud result with the new speaker type, and the stay-alive, though small, gives enough backup power to give pretty good
reliable running.
