Kit: MS440C; SugarCube24X15X09
Hornby's retooling of their 9F model provides a convenient 21pin socket in the tender and a speaker enclosure designed for a
15x11mm StickyGasket speaker. However, the enclosure removes easily so we can put in a much better dual SugarCube24X15X09
speaker in its' place paired with a Zimo MS440C sound decoder. This is a nice update to the 9F - good detailing, and a much
more solid-feel than previous Hornby 9Fs.
Photos here of the model before putting the kit in.
The speaker enclosure simply peels off a double-sided pad so we can plunk our dual SugarCube in exactly the same place. Speaker
wires will solder to the pads marked S1 and S2.
With the 21pin blanking plate removed, and the speaker box taken out, we can put our own kit in now... MS440C/D with dual
SugarCube24X15X09 speaker. We use the 'sample' 1000uF capacitor that comes with the MS440 as stay-alive.
A piece of Kapton tape over the PCB to make sure we cannot get a short circuit once the decoder is plugged in.
Decoder plugged in, and capacitor BlackTack'd above, ensuring that there is insulation to the capacitor.
The model comes with a firebox light, which is nice, although it is on permanently with DCC as it is not connected to the
decoder.
