Kit: MX659N18; 15x11mm StickyGasket speaker
Dapol's OO Terrier looks great, and the promise of a Next18 decoder socket, and a factory-fitted speaker, as a well as a
firebox glow light, gives us great expectations...
Remove a couple of screws and the body comes off easily, revealing the Next18 socket PCB and speaker. In this model we found
both items unsecured on the side tanks, so worryingly likely to drop onto the wheels and cause short-circuits (something we've
had reported by a number of customers).
There is no enclosure for the speaker, so it relies on being pushed against the side body to create a seal. You're never going
to get much bass out of this with that approach, but at least it should make DCC sound installation simple.
Here we see our little MX659N18 sound decoder ready to plug in.
The factory speaker is quite a low-powered one, so we decide to replace it with one of our 1.2W StickyGasket 15X11mm speakers
instead, and use the sticky gasket to fix it more securely to the wall. It still won't be loud or bassy, but will be at least
some improvement over the original speaker.
All done, OK. Need to check that the decoder doesn't drop down onto the wheels, but it should just clear it. This ones goes
very nicely.
