Farish 4F (MS)

Graham Farish 4F with MS Sound

Kit: MS480/MS481; SugarCube5; 2x 470uF Flat Tantalums

We're revisiting Farish's lovely 4F to fit Zimo MS sound and a stay-alive. This model has a 6pin socket in an otherwise empty tender.

Example 1 Example 1

Measure up for the speaker, which is limited on height, so SugarCube5 is the selection.

Example 1 Example 1

Prepare the kit, for which we use an MS480 (or MS481), and a pair of flat 470uF/16V Tantalums for stay-alive. An MS491 would have worked OK for this installation too. We remove all the unwanted wires from the decoder in order to keep it compact and neat.

Example 1 Example 1

The Tantalums are connection in parallel which keeps the voltage at 16V, and protect with Kapton tape.

Example 1

The original 6pin socket PCB is removed from the model to create as much space as possible, then our kit goes in nice and neatly. We don't even need to remove the coal, as it all fits in underneath.
